OSCARS – Nominations & The Joker in The Pack On Top .2010 – 2020 Who has Won More Oscars ?

Spread the love

In today’s issue: Oscar nominations are in. Somewhere out there, Joaquin Phoenix is dancing, probably.
(WARNER BROS.)
Cinephiles, it’s your day: Oscar nominations are in. Here are a few takeaways from this year’s list, courtesy of our film critic David Sims:

It’s the year of the throwback film. Nostalgia played well, with films that looked to the past netting a large share of the praise. (See: The Irishman, 1917, et al.)
Expect diversity conversations to continue. Only one actor of color was nominated, and no female directors are up for Best Director. Among the talents overlooked this year: Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Lopez, Lupita Nyong’o, Awkwafina, and Greta Gerwig.
The Oscars are warming up to superhero films. Case in point: Joker scored more nominations than any other project (11 in total). It’s only the second comic-book film to get a Best Picture nomination.
(SONY / COLUMBIA)
What will win Best Picture?
Below are the nine nominees for the top Oscar prize, paired with The Atlantic’s review of said film. (Spoiler: We didn’t love all of them equally.)

The current favorites are Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Sam Mendes’s 1917—“two original and lush epics that triumphed at a 2019 box office mostly dominated by franchise features,” Sims noted.

Ford v Ferrari
“A rollicking tale of fast cars and capitalism”

The Irishman
“Martin Scorsese’s epic funeral for the gangster genre”

Jojo Rabbit
“A fraught tonal experiment”

Joker
“Pompous, grim, and one-note”

Little Women
“A sparklingly clever new take on a classic”

Marriage Story
“Noah Baumbach’s heartfelt divorce film”

1917
“A visual feat and a bad movie”

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
“An epic and melancholy hangout film”

Parasite
“A loopily brilliant drama that might be the most thrilling film of the year”
