The crimes of John Mayaki and the wailing of a failed government by John MayakiEdo

For those paying attention to happenings in the Edo political and media space, the state government, and all its apparatus, are waging a war against one man. His name is John Mayaki, and he once served as the Press Secretary to Godwin Obaseki who, according to some political analysts, is at the end of his wits.

After several years of leaving Obaseki’s administration to glowing praise and recommendation, especially by senior government officials who, until this day, proclaim his name and declare their longing for his media acumen, the state government is embarking on a revision, and it is now reversing itself.

Through proxies, and using faceless persons, they have called Mayaki all kinds of things. They said he is a thief who carted away millions, never mind the fact that months after his disengagement, he was in Benin, frequently seen with the governor at events, and not a single allegation of corruption was laid or filed. They also said he is incompetent, despite the governor’s attempt to swap his role as CPS with the utmost position at the Nigerian Observer, an important media outfit, given its history and legacy, which the governor, who talks more than he does, has promised to reinvigorate.

Evidently, these claims by the government against this man do not hold to scrutiny as, like all blackmail, they are mere conjectures with no relationship, however distant, with obtainable facts.

So why is a state government, spearheaded by the governor, desperate to impugn the character of a man? The answer is simple and the crime of John Mayaki is not farfetched: he dared to disagree with a tyrant, and asked questions of a government given to corruption and secrecy.

It is a predictable tactic and its repeated usage, again, exemplifies the lack of creativity and innovation with which Obaseki governs. Like a typical con man, he is terrible at the profession he moonlights in, and his cover ups are only as complex as the sophistication of an infant.

John Mayaki demanded, as a stakeholder and a private citizen empowered by law, for the government to shed its opacity and list, with detailed facts, the contractors it has awarded projects and monies involved. In saner climes, where government places a premium on transparency and public accountability, this is hardly an outlier, neither does it generate any controversy. In actual fact, for the singular purpose that a citizen has to ask for details on contracts involving public resources amounting to billions, is considered a failure on the part of the government. Awarding processes including public bidding and tender were created, and made constitutional, to guarantee transparency and ensure that in the spending of public resources, the best value for money is derived. But this is Edo state, and since the emergence of Godwin Obaseki, sanity has vacated and insanity, a complete deviation from the norm, is the order of the day.

John Mayaki also offended those whose soul has been bought for a pittance, therefore, every challenge to the government is considered by these lots as a personal slight. Their small, warped minds cannot comprehend why a man can disagree with those he used to agree with; and why allegiance can be withdrawn upon the discovery of incompetence and lack of will to fulfill promises.

These are the crimes of John Mayaki and the governor, propped up by mindless sycophants, has decided to go to any length to bring him down, lest he hastens his journey into political oblivion through hard facts which vividly demonstrate his utter failure. But Obaseki forgets the wise old saying that a man who makes trouble for others, makes trouble for himself. For so long, he has cheated the Edo people, jilted contractors and governed the state as a personal fiefdom. The time to give account is finally here and instead of presenting his records, he is embarking on a politics of vendetta, violence and threats.

Godwin Obaseki, and his acolytes, are like the biblical rich man who reigned in terror and oppressed the poor, forgetting that there is a God, and in the aftermath, a reward beckons. The reward is here for them and no matter how much blackmail their feeble brains conceive, it will not save them from the fury of the people they have decieved for so long.

John Mayaki is not Godwin Obaseki’s problem. The problem of Godwin Obaseki, is Godwin Obaseki.

    • Kola Edokpayi Governor Godwin Obaseki should respond to the allegation leveled against him.
