Trump Tweet Saying Obama Doesnāt Deserve Credit For Killing Bin Laden Resurfaces After Baghdadi Kill
After President Trump downplayed the killing of 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden during a rambling press conference Sunday announcing the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Twitter users reminded the president not to get ahead of himself in taking credit for the raid.
Many users resurfaced a 2012 tweet from Trump after then-President Barack Obama brought up in a presidential debate that his administration had taken out Osama bin Laden, with Trump saying that Obama doesnāt deserve credit for the kill.
āStop congratulating Obama for killing Bin Laden,ā Trump wrote at the time. āThe Navy Seals killed Bin Laden.ā
āThe military and Navy Seals should be given more credit for Bin Ladenās death, not Obama, who works hard to take all the credit away from them,ā he tweeted again a day later.
āBin Laden was a big thing,ā Trump said Sunday from the Diplomatic Room at the White House, ābut this is the biggest there is ā this is the worst ever. Osama bin Laden was big, but Osama became big with the World Trade Center.ā
Trump credited Baghdadi with ābuilding a caliphate,ā while bin Laden was only responsible for almost 3,000 deaths in the Sept. 11 attacks.
āIām writing a book. World Trade Center had not come down ⦠And Iām saying to people take out Osama bin Laden, that nobody ever heard of,ā Trump said. āI mean, al-Baghdadi everybody hears of because heās built this monster for a long time. But nobody ever heard of Osama bin Laden until really the World Trade Center. But about a year before the World Trade Center came down, the book came out. I was talking about Osama bin Laden. I said, āYou have to kill him. You have to take him out.ā Nobody listened to me.ā
TheĀ NY Daily NewsĀ reports:
Trump has repeatedly tried to take credit for warning the world about bin Laden, including last November during an attack on William H. McRaven, the retired Navy admiral who oversaw the 2011 raid.
āOf course we should have captured Osama Bin Laden long before we did. I pointed him out in my book just BEFORE the attack on the World Trade Center,ā he tweeted at the time. āPresident Clinton famously missed his shot. We paid Pakistan Billions of Dollars & they never told us he was living there. Fools!ā
In Trumpā s āThe America We Deserve,ā published in January 2000, he mentions bin Laden just once, referring to him as āa shadowy figure with no fixed addressā and providing no details or suggestions to take action against him or al-Qaida.
