With Wijnaldum’s contract situation still up in the air we’re starting to hear continental chatter about other options.

Everybody assumed that when January rolled around and Gini Wijnaldum would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement, we would know what the future held for the 30-year-old Dutch international most believed was likely to join Barcelona.

Nearly two months on from when he could have, though, and his future remains up in the air. And today, a pair of stories emerged claiming competitors to Barca and the Reds. First, Le Parisien claimed that Paris Saint-Germain were an option.

What could be holding up an offer from them, though—and potentially delaying a decision by Wijnaldum—is uncertainty over the future of David Alaba, whose signing would require a significant contract that could impact other summer moves.

Then came a claim from MilanLive that AC Milan

are also targeting Wijnaldum—but that the player’s preference would be PSG, which means they’ll have to do some convincing or wait to see if PSG’s potential move for the player falls through.

All of which means that maybe we don’t know what Wijnaldum’s future is because we’re waiting on PSG to make a formal offer. Or it could just be noise and really it’s still a choice between Liverpool and Barcelona for the veteran midfielder.

In that case, general financial uncertainty in football world due to coronavirus as well as the more specific financial uncertainty that exists at Barcelona and uncertainty about Ronald Koeman’s future could be what’s delaying any decision.
