Why do many people prefer moving to Canada instead of Australia, even though the Canadian winter is harsh?
Totally depends on an individual. I had lived in US for 6 years before permanently moving to Canada. My reasons for choosing Canada were not weather specific. I knew what I was getting into as far as the winters were concerned.
Here are my reasons:
For certain age, education, english language proficiency and work experience, Canada has one of the most straightforward points based immigration system.
I wanted to remain in North America. Being in tech, the opportunities are much more than Australia since not only you have Canadian companies tech and non-tech requiring engineers but so many US companies with their offices in Canada. Due to COVID, you now have whole North America for remote work. The time zone works really well. This I would say was a very important point for me.
I have very close high school friends who came here before me and so I used to get lot of info about the overall life here. I have few relatives here too. I also made lifelong friends in the US whom I will definitely meet in future when they visit here or I go there(border is currently closed for good). I have nobody in Australia.
I dealt with my first winter last year quite comfortably and it was only possible because:
I knew about the winters of Canada. Moving from California I was very well prepared mentally.
I invested in the best possible winter wear with heavy jacket Parka (didnt realize they could be so powerful), thermals, winter boots, thick socks, neck warmers, beanies, you name it. I would always check temperature and dress accordingly before going out. Layering is what truly helps. Trust me it wasn’t bad at all. Its not really harsh weather, its bad winter gear.
Indoors are warm everywhere whether its offices, subways, buses, street cars so its just about getting from one building to another. With right winter wear, its very much possible to take long walks outside atleast here in Toronto.
I guess the only common thing that Australia has for me is cricket but obviously that wasn’t a factor in my decision making at all.
