Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has issued a strong warning to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) regarding its members who reportedly support individuals involved in criminal activities such as banditry, rape, armed robbery, and other offenses.
The governor alleges that some NBA members exploit the concept of fundamental human rights to secure the release of suspects accused of serious crimes.
Radda asserts that there have been instances where individuals suspected of crimes like banditry, rape, terrorism, and armed robbery were granted bail by the courts, only to commit similar offenses once released. He argues that these incidents could have been prevented if bail had not been granted to these suspects.
The governor delivered this cautionary message during a recent event at the Katsina Government House Council Chamber. The occasion marked the swearing-in of four new High Court Judges, namely Barrister Nuraddeen Abdulmumini, Halima Lawal Bagiwa, Abdullahi Bara’u, and Ma’aruf Amiru Sanusi. These judges, hailing from Musawa, Katsina, Faskari, and Funtua local government areas, were selected based on their proven track records, dedication, and integrity.
Governor Radda urged the new judges to harness technological advancements to enhance the efficiency of justice delivery in the state. He stressed the significance of addressing the speed of justice delivery and called for collective efforts from all stakeholders within the state’s justice sector.
Acknowledging the ongoing security challenges, Radda appealed for continued support from the residents to counter these issues. The state government has given the nod for the state judiciary to proceed with its initiative to incorporate technology into the court and judicial processes.
Expressing concern over the attitudes of justice sector actors in the state, Governor Radda disclosed that the government has given an order to the state administration of criminal justice to address the issue of releasing suspects involved in crimes. He also announced the establishment of a coordination committee tasked with ensuring swift handling of all criminal cases.
Radda conveyed the government’s commitment to provide improved logistics for the Ministry of Justice, police, and prisons, aiming to achieve more effective justice delivery. He encouraged the new judges to uphold qualities of dedication, professionalism, and integrity as they take on their roles within the judicial system.
The newly appointed judges took their oaths of allegiance and office, pledging to fulfill their responsibilities in alignment with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
