In a ray of hope amid a disturbing incident, eight of the twenty-five choir members kidnapped from the Christ Apostolic Church, CAC, Oke Igan, Akure, have managed to escape from their abductors.
The incident occurred at around 3 pm on Friday as the choir members were traveling to Ifon in the Ose council area of the state to attend a burial ceremony.
The Owo-Ifon-Benin highway, known for its deplorable state, has gained notoriety for kidnappings and armed robberies. The choir members were kidnapped while en route, highlighting the security challenges faced by travelers on this route.
Confirming the escape of eight of the abducted victims, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the Commander of the state’s security outfit known as Amotekun, spoke to Vanguard in Akure, the state capital. He revealed that personnel from the Police Anti-Kidnapping unit, Amotekun Corps, and the Nigerian Army are collaborating to track down the kidnappers in the Owo/Ose axis and secure the release of the remaining victims.
Meanwhile, members of the church have come together in a series of marathon prayers, seeking divine intervention for the safe release of all the kidnapped victims.
The state police command has also officially confirmed the abduction. Funmi Odunlami, the spokesperson for the command, disclosed that the vehicle transporting the victims, which bore the church’s insignia, was abandoned in the Elegbeka area near Ifon. She further stated that the Police Anti-Kidnapping squad and other tactical teams have been deployed to the area to rescue the victims and bring those responsible for the crime to justice.
This incident sheds light on the ongoing security challenges faced by residents and travelers along certain highways in Nigeria and underscores the urgent need for improved security measures to protect innocent citizens.
