Jibrin Samuel Okutepa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has expressed strong criticism of Nigerian politicians, accusing them of lacking principles and prioritizing their own interests over the welfare of the people.
In a scathing commentary, Okutepa argued that most Nigerian politicians are driven by selfish agenda and have no conscience or patience to nurture political parties to maturity.
According to Okutepa, Nigerian politicians often jump from one party to another, with some even funding the activities of opposing parties using ill-gotten and stolen money. He likened them to fish that can hardly survive outside the “dirty and corrupt water of politics.”
The senior lawyer lamented that democracy suffers terrible shipwrecks in Nigeria due to the actions of politicians who prioritize their own benefits over the greater good. He accused them of polluting the streams of justice and mortgaging the future of unborn generations to attain power.
Okutepa also criticized some youth politicians, claiming that they enter politics not to promote the welfare of the people but to be seen as having arrived as “big boys and girls.” He alleged that many of them have unexplained wealth and allow themselves to be used for anti-democratic activities that have retarded the growth and development of democracy in Nigeria.
The SAN emphasized that he is not a member of any political party in Nigeria but is passionate about the growth and development of the country. He stated that his views are always motivated by his desire to see Nigerians experience good governance at all levels.
Okutepa concluded by asserting that most Nigerian politicians do not want true democracy in Nigeria because they would never win free, fair, and credible elections. He called on Nigerians to be wary of politicians who prioritize their own interests over the welfare of the people.
