The FIFA World Cup is the most followed and popular tournament that is run by FIFA. After several changes to its format, football’s governing body hands out 31 spots to participate in the tournament among all confederations. These teams are joined by the host nation to complete all 32 teams.

The first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930, with Uruguay keeping the trophy home. Since then, Brazil has won five titles, followed closely by Germany and Italy, who own four titles.

The 32 teams are drawn in eight groups. The two best teams from every group enter the knockout stage. Extra time and penalties are used to determine the winner if necessary.

France won the 2018 World Cup held in Russia by beating Croatia in the final match. This was the second win for Les Bleus in this tournament, following their victory in 1998.

The next edition of the FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar in the year 2022. The competition will kick off on November 20, 2022, until December 18, 2022. This decision was made to prevent the effects of high temperatures on the teams and fans if the tournament had been held during the summer. The draw was held on April 1, 2022, where details about the group stage and late rounds were determined.

Qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar began on June 6, 2019, while the inter-confederation playoffs were held in June 2022. A total of 31 spots were up for grabs as countries from six confederations battle it out.

AFC World Cup qualifying:

• 46 Nations involved
• Qualifiers from June 6, 2019 to June7, 2022
• Inter-confederation play-offs scheduled for June 2022.

• *The first two rounds of the AFC WCQ will also be used to determine the teams that will participate in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

CAF World Cup qualifying:

• 54 Nations involved
• Qualifiers started on September 4, 2019 and came to an end on March 29, 2022.
• 5 spots at stake
• No Inter-confederation play-offs
• Qualified teams: Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Cameroon.

CONCACAF World Cup qualifying:

• 35 Nations involved
• Qualifiers started on March 24, 2021 and concluded on March 30, 2022.
• Inter-confederation play-offs scheduled for June 2022.
• 3 direct spots at stake, one more available via inter-confederation playoffs
• Qualified teams: Canada, Mexico, United States, Costa Rica (via inter-confederation playoffs)

CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying:

• 10 Nations involved
• Qualifiers started on October 8, 2020 and came to an end on March 29, 2022.
• Inter-confederation play-offs scheduled for June 2022.
• 4 direct spots at stake, one more available via inter-confederation playoffs
• Qualified teams: Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay.

OFC World Cup qualifying:

• 11 Nations involved.
• Qualifiers started on March 17, 2022 and concluded on March 30, 2022.
• Inter-confederation play-offs scheduled for June 2022.
• 0 or 1 spot at stake.
• Qualified teams: None.

UEFA World Cup qualifying:

• 55 Nations involved
• Qualifiers began on March 24, 2021 and came to an end on June 5, 2022.
• 13 spots at stake.
• No Inter-confederation play-offs required
• Qualified teams: Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, Wales.

During the KO Stage, there will be two kick-off times: 6:00 p.m. AST, and 10:00 p.m. AST.

During the group stage, there will be four possible kick-off times: 2:00 a.m. PT /5:00 a.m. ET, 5:00 a.m. PT/8:00 a.m. ET, 8:00 a.m. PT/11:00 a.m. ET, and 11:00 a.m. PT/14:00 p.m. ET.

During the KO Stage, there will be two kick-off times: 7:00 a.m. PT/10:00 a.m. ET, and 11:00 a.m. PT/14:00 p.m. ET.
